NPDES Stormwater Program Updates & Key Compliance Tips

A talk by Randy Braun and Lori Gates
IDEM Office of Water Quality, Wetlands and Stormwater Programs & Christopher B. Burke Engineering

To focus on current updates to IDEM’s NPDES stormwater regulations and include tips for enhancing those key compliance items for the Rule 6 – industrial stormwater runoff program. IDEM has recently made improvements to the NPDES stormwater program requirements to align more closely with federally required EPA standards. Those requirements will be reviewed and discussed.

Certain sectors of industrial facilities throughout Indiana are subject to 327 IAC 15-6 or Rule 6 which regulates stormwater runoff from these facilities. In addition, these facilities can also be affected by 327 IAC 15-5 or Rule 5 which regulates stormwater runoff from construction sites and 327 IAC 15-13 or Rule 13 which regulates stormwater runoff from and into municipal separate storm sewer systems (MS4). IDEM is under a mandate from EPA to update all of the Rules above and turn them into administrative general permits.

Attendees will learn about the new requirements as well as gain a better understanding of how the NPDES stormwater program works. They can then utilize that information to improve their own Rule 6 industrial stormwater programs which includes pollution prevention as a key element.
